Almost Ready for Demo

Here is the kitchen of Kitty Villa, our rental house while the remodel is underway. Great late 1950s features including knotty pine cabinets, but also low ceilings - I can touch them.

The Dirty Room is almost stripped to the studs. Yesterday the air conditioner came out, and a high window suddenly became a door.

Marauding children wielding tools gleefully struck at the drywall.

One of the reasons why the back slab has to go: it was never tied into the original slab and has been moving independently ever since it was built in the early 90s.

Also, the back slab was inexplicably poured on top of loose stacked bricks.

The balloon test was called off on account of a slight breeze, so we stuck an old gutter up to show where the peak of the bedroom roof will be.

Suburban Archeology: we found 1970s vinyl under the linoleum, then a layer of 1/8" plywood, the original linoleum, 3/8' plywood, all floating on 1" planks set on the concrete slab. The slab is covered by a nice layer of tar, which will be fun to remove.
